Implant

Dental Implants Quality of life can diminish for the millions of adults who suffer tooth loss. If you are missing one or more teeth and wish to eat your favorite foods, increase your chewing ability, improve your appearance, speech, and self-esteem, then you are a candidate for dental implants.

Dental implant offers an excellent alternative to the limitations of conventional crowns, bridges, root canals and dentures. Furthermore, dental implants can be use to stop alveolar bone loss which, in turn, slow the aging process, improve the immune system, and stop facial changes.

When dental implant is not indicated?

There are some general conditions which preclude the application of dental implants. These situations include: debilitating or uncontrolled diseases, pregnancy, conditions that severely impair healing, psychiatric disorders that interfere with patient understanding and compliance with necessary procedures, inability of patient to manage oral hygiene, or patient allergies to specific components of the implant.

Are you still with me? Remember, those are only general conditions. With proper medical care and strict dental protocols, the vast majority of medically compromised patients can enjoy the benefits of dental implants.

What are dental implants?

Dental implant serves as the replacement for the root portion of a missing natural tooth. It is machined from surgical-grade titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) to exact specifications. A dentist places the implant into either the upper or lower jaw boThis can be done immediately after the loss of a tooth, or after an extended period of time.

Applications

Dental Implants Implants can be used to replace anything from a single missing tooth with a single implant up to multiple missing teeth with corresponding implants.

Unlike the traditional bridge restoration technique, dental implants eliminate the need for cutting down two healthy natural teeth to replace the missing teeth. Studies have shown that at least thirty four percent of those conventional bridges will fail after fifteen years. Furthermore, these failures often jeopardize the natural teeth that were used. Dental implants bridges offer a cost effective, permanent solution, which cannot decay.

Dental implants can be use to dramatically improve function of existing dentures. This is done by increasing retention and support. If conditions permit, a special type of implant can be used that requires no healing period, resulting in immediate gratification.

Dental Implants Dental Implants Dental implant is a prudent alternative to root canal treatment. The root canal therapy success rate is 53% to 95%, which is reduced by 10% to 20% if the root has been infected. Even if treated successfully, root-canal-teeth are still susceptible to decay and fracture. Dental implants cannot decay and almost never break. The cost of saving a tooth with a variety of treatments can exceed the cost of the placement and restoration of an implant.

Procudure

Dental Implants The placement of a dental implant is typically completed in less than an hour as an office procedure with only local anesthesia. After the implant placement, the patient may have mild soreness for up to seventy-two hours. An over-the-counter pain reliever will alleviate the discomfort for most patients. For aesthetic reasons, it is usually possible to have a fixed transitional crown inserted immediately after implant placement so that you are never without a tooth. After a period of two to six months of healing, the implant integrates with the bone and becomes a secure anchor. An abutment, which is either screwed or inserted into (more about this later) the implant, provides a solid base for a permanent crown or removable denture.

In general, the longer the tooth has been loss the less bone remains for the placement of implant. This bone loss, which can accelerate facial changes, is no longer a limitation to treatment. A variety of bone augmentation procedures can be performed, when needed, prior to or simultaneously with implant placement.

Maintenance

Taking care of dental implants is as simple as just brushing them. In fact, it requires less maintenance than a natural tooth.

Dental Implant Systems

I have had the pleasure of helping many, many patients improve their quality of life through dental implant therapy. Starting with my first dental implant patient over two decades ago, I have seen dental implant systems proliferate from only a few choices to over a dozen. I have used or evaluated most of these systems, and currently the Bicon Dental Implant System (BDIS) offers clear advantages over others. Most implant systems are comprised of several components, which are held together by screws with a septic connection, with bacterial seepage! In other words, the screw fittings leave space for bacterial invasions and by-products which can lead to undesirable odors and tastes. The crown is often affixed to the implant with an additional screw. As any engineer will tell you, screws inherently loosen and break. Alternatively, with the BDIS, the abutment fits into the implant via the bacterially-sealed, 1.5 degree locking taper connection with no screw (5).

Dental Implant Systems Bicon’s elegant design provides for greater surface area than other implant designs, thus enabling the use of shorter implants which often negates the need for costly bone grafting procedures (6, 7). Also, Bicon’s design provides for faster healing rate (bone heals at rate of 10 to 50 microns per day versus 1 to 3 microns per day), and consistent natural-looking gumlines, which translate to beautiful, natural looking restored teeth (1, 2, 3, 4). Take all those capabilities then add the revolutionary clinical techniques unique to BDIS and what was good just got great.
